The 2025 Academy Awards are today in Hollywood, California. Along with the biggest stars in film, many notable musicians are taking in the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre. In attendance are Wicked stars and renowned singers Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, newly trained singers Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbaro, Emilia Pérez’s Selena Gomez, and plenty more. Three musically inclined films got nominated for Best Picture: the film adaptation of the Wicked musical, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, and the Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez. Also nominated in the category is The Brutalist, which was scored by Daniel Blumberg.
Blumberg won the Academy Award for Best Original Score. He was going up against 2023’s winner, Volker Bertelmann, who scored the papal drama Conclave, along with Emilia Pérez’s Clément Ducol and Camille, The Wild Robot’s Kris Bowers, and Wicked’s John Powell and Stephen Schwartz.
The Emilia Pérez musicians, Ducol and Camille, and the film’s director, Jacques Audiard, won Best Original Song, for “El Mal.” The other nominated songs were “Mi Camino”; “Like a Bird,” the Sing Sing song written by Abraham Alexander and Black Pumas’ Adrian Quesada; Diane Warren’s The Six Triple Eight entry “The Journey”; and “Never Too Late,” a song for the Elton John film Elton John: Never Too Late that was made by John, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Watt, and Bernie Taupin.
